Disney Plans to Name Bob Iger’s Replacement as CEO by Early 2026
Disney announced on Monday that it will name Bob Iger’s successor as CEO in early 2026. This announcement marks the latest step in Disney's ongoing efforts to identify Iger’s replacement before his contract ends in December 2026.
James Gorman, former CEO of Morgan Stanley, has been appointed chairman of the board, taking over from Mark Parker. Starting on January 2, Gorman will lead the search for Disney’s next CEO. “A critical priority before us is to appoint a new CEO,” Gorman said, adding that the timing allows for a smooth transition before Iger’s departure.
Iger originally stepped down as CEO in 2020, but remained as executive chairman until he retired at the end of 2021. However, after his successor, Bob Chapek, was dismissed less than a year later, Iger was brought back as CEO. In July 2023, Disney extended Iger’s contract to ensure continuity through 2026.
Iger has made it clear that he intends to leave Disney permanently once his current contract expires. Disney is considering a mix of internal executives and external candidates for the role.
