Stuart Ross Carlson: Award-Winning Musician Explores the Vast Canvas of TV, Film, and Gaming Scores

Stuart Ross Carlson, a musician renowned for his triumphant victories in competitions such as the 2016 VSA International Young Soloists Competition and the 2017 University of Michigan School of Music Concerto Competition, is turning the page to a new chapter in his illustrious career. Based in Los Angeles, the highly-esteemed composer is broadening his creative scope by venturing into composing scores for television, film, commercials, and gaming.

In the spring of 2021, Carlson presented his exceptional talent to the small screen by composing six original scores for the riveting four-part PBS series "Portrait of a Landscape" broadcasted on KTWU. The documentary celebrates the breathtaking topography of Kansas and presented Carlson with an opportunity to widen his creative horizons and offer a musical interpretation of the state's picturesque scenery.

Creating the scores for "Portrait of a Landscape" provided Carlson with invaluable insights into the subtle art of creating complementary visual narrative with evocative sound. Invited to compose two additional pieces for the series, Carlson discovered a nascent passion that motivated him to further explore and immerse himself in these dynamic industries.

This exploration marked a critical juncture in Carlson's professional journey, as a broader audience started to appreciate his work. While the popularity of his compositions escalated, so did the recognition of Carlson’s prodigious talents. His transition to composing music for various media, education, and entertainment platforms became an organic evolution for this versatile composer.

In regard to his creative process, Carlson explains, "Visitors to my website can sample a diverse selection of my work, highlighting my range in composition and musical styles. I also mentally orchestrate music as soon as I learn about a potential project, contemplating elements such as instrumentation, key, tempo, and overall style. I find it beneficial to have a dialogue with the project's creative lead once I have completed the rough drafts, ensuring our visions are harmonious and opening space for feedback.”

As a respected member of the Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra, Carlson's significant contributions to classical music continue to earn him acclaim. Now, with this fresh endeavor, he stands ready to delve into the infinite potential of screen music. He is excited to join forces with directors, producers, and other creatives, translating their ideas into auditory masterpieces through his music.

He is also excited to continue exploring the intersection between music and storytelling and to push the boundaries of traditional scoring. Carlson understands the dynamic nature of the audio-visual medium and uses his scores to enhance the narrative, elevating the emotional impact of each scene. Whether it's a poignant piano melody underscoring a dramatic cinematic moment or a pulsating electronic beat propelling the tension in a gaming sequence, Carlson's compositions resonate with audiences, creating unforgettable experiences and contributing to his growing success.

Yet, despite his success, Carlson remains grounded, attributing his achievements to an unquenchable thirst for knowledge and an insatiable curiosity for exploring the untried. Stuart Ross Carlson is not only a talented musician and composer but is a twin as well as autistic, receiving a diagnosis at the age of three.
