Sarah Burton Steps into Role as Givenchy's New Creative Director
Sarah Burton has been appointed as the new creative director of Givenchy, the luxury fashion house owned by LVMH.
Effective immediately, Burton will oversee the creative direction for all women's and men's collections. She expressed her excitement about joining Givenchy, describing it as "a gem" and looking forward to bringing her own vision and beliefs to the iconic brand.
After a 26-year tenure at Alexander McQueen, including 13 years as creative director, Burton departed from the company in September 2023. Her leadership at Alexander McQueen began after the passing of founder Lee Alexander McQueen in 2010, during which she significantly grew the brand's sales.
Sidney Toledano, chairman of the Givenchy board, praised Burton as "an exceptional creative talent" whose unique vision will be invaluable to the maison. He believes her leadership will enhance Givenchy's future success and international reputation.
The announcement follows the departure of former creative director Matthew Williams, who stepped down in January 2024 after three years. With Burton's arrival, Givenchy enters a new chapter, guided by her distinctive creative energy.
Alessandro Valenti, Givenchy's CEO appointed in July, expressed enthusiasm about Burton joining the team. He anticipates that her collaboration with the brand's talented teams will usher in an exciting era for Givenchy.
Burton's appointment is notable as she becomes one of the few women to hold a creative director position at an LVMH house. Her arrival signifies a move toward greater diversity in high-profile roles within the fashion industry.
Renowned for her precise tailoring and feminine designs, Burton received acclaim for her work at Alexander McQueen. Her final show was inspired by female anatomy and dedicated to Lee McQueen, reflecting her commitment to upholding the brand's values.
Burton's debut collection for Givenchy is scheduled for Paris Fashion Week in March, showcasing the Autumn/Winter 2025 line. Her leadership is expected to bring fresh perspectives and innovation to the storied fashion house.
